Will Arnett’s already gravely voice dropped even lower in order to play Batman, the master of superhero brooding. In most films, the voice is a trick — just another tool for Batman to build his persona as a hardened, fearsome vigilante. But in The Lego Batman Movie, the voice maketh the man. Arnett’s version of the dark knight is nonstop entertainment, with teenager-like responses and sardonic charm. Every word out of Batman’s mouth is self-glorification, sarcastic wit, or parody on the Batman franchise, but that combined with Michael Cera’s exuberant, wide-eyed Robin is the stuff of comedic legend. The movie also plays up Alfred acting as Bruce Wayne’s parental figure, and Arnett perfectly captures an angsty teenager whenever he and Alfred are together. Case in point: Batman yelling “No. No. No. No. No!” as his body flops up the grand staircase.
